Approval of the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks

On June 18, 2026, Law No. 27.812 was published in the Official Gazette of the Argentine Republic, approving the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, concluded in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya, on May 18, 2007 (the “Nairobi Convention“).

What does the Convention provide?
The Convention aims to establish a uniform international legal framework for the locating, marking, and removal of hazardous wrecks, as well as clear rules on liability and the requirement for financial security to cover the costs of wreck removal.

Why is it important?
Argentina’s approval of the Nairobi Convention enables the country to join a uniform international legal regime that enhances maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment. It also aligns Argentina with the international standards applied by the Convention’s 75 States Parties.
